I need your help with downloading my adobe photoshop which was originally bought for windows to my new mac, I have tried to use the original CD and this doesn't work.

Not possible... your serial number is for Windows, and will not work to install the Mac version
Since you have CS5, there is also no way to swap your Windows version for a Mac version
If you don't want to buy an upgrade to CS6 Creative Cloud now includes Creative Suite Master Collection and Design Premium features you might consider Photoshop Elements
