I recently received photoshop as a gift and it's telling me my license number is wrong

How do I fix this without having to pay for another license number. This is the second time I've had this problem. I'm about to switch to a different photo editing software

    Exactly which version of Photoshop, and do you mean Photoshop or Photoshop Elements?

    Were you sent a BOXED version from a store, and was there a serial number in the box?
