Illustrator CS5 won't launch

I have been using Illustrator CS5 successfully since Feb 2011 (Windows XP). Now it won't launch. Have tried uninstalling (including preferences) and re-installing, and also tried in compatability mode, but nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

    Thanks for your reply. No error message, the egg-timer shows, then disappears. Illustrator.exe is listed in processes – but the product doesn’t launch.
