Question

Inappropriate language?

My bank sent me a new credit card because my existing number was apparently compromised in a hack. No biggie.

After attempting to bill my old number, I got an email from Adobe with the following message:

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's a problem with your preferred payment method. Follow these steps to help us fix the problem.

It's a small thing, but I find the opening phrase, "we hate to be the bearer of bad news," offensive. It sounds like they're informing me that I'm a deadbeat or have some sort of STD.

Is this just me being too sensitive?

Seems very neutral to me, it's a rather nice way to bring up a potential tricky subject. Wait until you deal with Home Office or TV Licence people (UK only): they really treat you like a criminal in every communication!

Is English your native language? If not, please note that there is no offense in this sentence. Your mother could have told you that, when there would be no electricity for an hour, or you teacher could have told you that, when you would need to redo a test... It’s standard language.

No offense. They just do not like to bring bad news. Where is the problem?

Seems neutral enough to me. An attempt at a different kind of pleasantry.

I've had similar from other places in the past. Usually an expiry date needed updating or similar.

I read it as them just trying to approach a sensitive (for some) subject in a gentle, friendly way.
