InDesign patch install problems

Hello world. I'm running InDesign CS5.5, version 7.53. I received a file saved in CS6, so got a message i could not open it unless it was opened and re-saved as CS4, but I'd rather not have to keep on asking people to r-esave and resend files.

I read in a forum that AdobeInDesign7_5_3_Patch-All would fix me up, but when i run that it tells me that i need to install a new copy of Adobe Application manager. I've done that twice, but when i try to run the patch i still get the message that I need to install a new copy of Adobe Application manager.

The ultimate goal is to be able to open files created in CS6.

I purchased this software on a student-discount, but don't know if that affects my ability to apply the patch. Any suggestions? And thank you!

updates are free, but you cannot update a cs5.5 program to cs6.  so that cs5.5 patch is not going to change your id cs5.5 to id cs6.

upgrades are not free, but you can upgrade a cs5.5 program to cs6.
