installation failure

I attempted to install Acrobat XI Pro on my mac (Mavericks 10.9), but ran into the following error message. "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."  I have a serial number and attempted to install both with and without dashes in the number and also to install as the free 30 day trial.  All attempts ended in the error message.
