I have Lightroom already installed on my iMac. Does the CC installation process routinely address that issue? Or would I need to find special instructions to handle it?

you should secure your serial number so you can reinstall perpetually licensed lr6 in the future, if you terminate your subscription.
typically the cc desktop app changes your lr 6 installation to an lr cc subscription. you may also use, How to convert a Lightroom CC trial to Lightroom 6
