Question

Is Adobe committed to supporting the Mac platform in the future?

I'm looking for evidence that Adobe is committed to continued development of Creative Cloud for the Mac platform. I work for a large corporate company and my department is the only department on Macs. Our IT department says they have heard at conferences that Adobe may not be supporting the Mac platform in the future. Does anyone know if that has any truth to it?

1. Sounds like your IT department just wants you all to change out from Mac in order to simplify their lives. Seen it happen where I used to work. Supporting Mac and PC is a pain for them, so they try to get the creatives to give up their Macs because most IT guys dont understand Mac.

2. I have a friend at Adobe. And according to her, not only are they planning to continue supporting Mac, they even have a few apps in the works that are only for Mac at the moment. Once they launch on Mac, they will start development over to PC. Opposite of normal, which is awesome for once for Mac to get something first!

I have no doubt that as long as Apple makes top PCs and laptops that Adobe stays committed to the Mac platform. How can you provide evidence against rumors that are rumors only.

Well, I know how that works. Corner them! Ask them what conferences spread those rumors. Apple has a nice clientèle and quite a lot of them are in the graphics art business and prepress business.

To be honest, none can for sure say what the world will be in 5 years, but I'm sure that Adobe will still support the Mac. I have no numbers but when talking to creatives, most of them prefer the Mac.

Also, as has been correctly pointed out, our IT department is not fond of our Macs. They tolerate us, but don't really know how to support us, and their lives would no doubt be easier if we switched to the PC. Although they are willing to try to learn our needs better. We are a graphics group and have no intention of switching.

I also reached out to Adobe directly, which getting to a human was difficult, and they confirmed their support for the Mac platform moving forward. Now, the individual I spoke with on the phone was not someone in a leadership position, so take that for what its worth.

I appreciate everyones feedback.

Don't show your IT this, but Adobe products work fine on Windows... says a Windows guy.

The argument that Adobe stops Mac support is nonsense (for the moment). Apple is doing great, they are probably more profitable with their PC business than the top 5 Windows PC manufacturer together.

I do not know numbers, but I would guess that at least half of the Adobe business comes from MacOS. And the proof that both platforms are equally important is the release timing: even beta starts at the same moment if I'm right.

I'm old enough to remember when Adobe made software for Apple computers only.

Q: Why would they abandon Mac users at this late date?

A: They wouldn't.

I agree with John.  I think you're being hoodwinked by somebody in your IT dept who would prefer it if everyone used the same platform.

As the saying goes, if you don't know any good rumours then start one.

Our IT department says they have heard at conferences that Adobe may not be supporting the Mac platform in the future.

Your IT department seems susceptible to giving credence to unfounded rumours with no evidence to support such an assertion.

The onus should be on them to seek more information. If something like that had been mentioned by Adobe at a conference it would be all over the web immediately.

Seems irresponsible to take such baseless rumours back to your company without evidence - unless there's a pro-Windows agenda afoot - especially if your Mac department is in the minority surrounded by an ocean of Windows users.

Hi Chris,

Which conferences? Can you tell us that? It’s not something I have heard.

The conferences I go to are Adobe MAX and Creative Pro. Whenever a room is asked who is on Mac and who is on Windows, it’s always a majority of Macs. All of the labs at Adobe MAX are on Macs.

We don’t speak for Adobe as we are volunteers, but I strongly suspect that whoever said that at whatever conference also was not speaking on behalf of Adobe either.

They didn't specify which conference, in fact they were light on details in general. I've been using a Mac since 1991 (2 FX) and Adobe has been there from the beginning. I doubted the validity behind the claim, but just wanted to ask if anyone had hear of this. Thanks for the feedback.

I went to a conference once (I don't remember which one or when it was held or what it was about) and overhead that Adobe was going to stop supporting PCs.

Or maybe it was a dog show where I heard it, I can't recall.

Okay, I just started a rumor and I hope no one takes me seriously!

Good luck in standing your ground with your IT people, Chris!

that seems highly unlikely because adobe's investing quite a bit in converting all parts of its programs to 64 bit in anticipation of the os 10.15 which will support 64 bit only.
