Just installed Elements 12 and now have files in random order. Are these accessing original images or creating new ones?

I have just installed Elements 12 for the first time and now have image files in, what appear to be a random order.  Are these files the original files or copies.  How do I clear them and start fresh using the files & folders in there original format?
