Lightroom 5 Final hangs during install on Windows 8 and can't uninstall beta

When I try to install my fresh download of Lightroom 5 on my Windows 8 PC I built just for photography work, it hangs when the install progress bar shows.  A couple of times the status bar will get almost halfway and will hang (I think it says it is removing old software).  I have tried uninstalling the beta version, but the uninstall hangs right off and it won't uninstall.  I assume these may be related?  What can I do?
