Mac OS 10.13.2 Installing Lightroom 6 upgrade from Lightroom 3.6

I recently moved from a Windows laptop to a MacBook Pro running OSX High Sierra (10.13.2). My PC had LR 3.6, which I had upgraded to LR 6. I want to install the same on my new MBP, but it's not working.

First I tried simply installing from my LR6 upgrade .dmg file. That installer asked me for my serial number, which I provided. It then told me that an applicable product wasn't found (presumably because LR3 hadn't been installed yet), and prompted me to identify it and enter my LR3 serial number - which I did. At that point, clicking the Install button had no effect.

Next, I downloaded the LR3.6 .dmg file to try to install that explicitly, before upgrading to LR6. That also failed, as the installer would not allow me to specify the target install location on my MBP's hard disk.

Help?

installing lr3.6 on a mac with an incompatible os (eg, 10.13) is problematic and may not be possible.

however you should still be able to install an lr6 upgrade using the procedure mentioned in your 2nd paragraph.

restart your computer and retry installing lr6 per that 2nd paragraph.  if that fails again, restart your computer in safe mode and retry.
