Multiple error 145 installations for Adobe Illustrator

Hi,

I have had multiple versions of Adobe Illustrator throw an error 145 code each time Illustrator updates. This started happening after the release of CC 2017 (version 21.0) and every update and version of Illustrator since has given an error 145. Each time I update, I have to follow the instructions to uninstall Creative Cloud, erase user preferences with CCCleaner, reinstall Illustrator fresh, etc. But even after all that, I still get error 145 with each and every new Illustrator update. I was thinking that wiping CC as a whole would be a one-time thing. What keeps happening to trigger these errors? Is there another step of this process I am missing? It has become cumbersome to do this just to make Illustrator work.

Thanks,

Ethan

Ethan, I am sorry that you continue to face Error 145 whenever you attempt to update Illustrator CC.  Error 145 occurs because the installer is being blocked access from updating an existing file.  This is why removing the software allows the updates to occur successfully.

I would recommend reviewing any installed security software that may be preventing the update process.  It appears that it allowing the full application, and update process, but is blocking updates which come later on.

You can find more information about Error 145 at https://helpx-internal.corp.adobe.com/content/help/en/download-install/kb/troubleshoot-download-install-error.html .  You can also use the information listed in Creative Cloud download and install errors to locate the file that is unable to be replaced during the update process.  This may give you more insight into why the process is being blocked, Ethan.

Please update this public forum discussion, if you have any additional questions.

Hmm ok...

So I pulled up the error message and found the exact folder that's causing problems. The interesting thing is that it keeps telling me that in order to delete the folder, I need administrator access. It does this even when I run as administrator.

Any thoughts? I have tried changing the user permissions for the folder to fit the rest of the Creative Cloud apps, but it doesn't seem to want to do that.

Also I'm not entirely sure where to look to try to unblock the specific process on the computer that is blocking the update. I have Norton Antivirus and Windows Defender currently active.

And an additional detail I forgot to mention initially that I thought may help: Illustrator is the only app that is experiencing this problem. All of the others are fine. The only exception was one update for Photoshop (I don't remember which one) a while back.

Thanks for the update and confirmation that we are looking at a permission error.  Which folder are you facing problems accessing and removing?

As a next step, you can try creating a new local administrator account to see if you face the same permission error.  Microsoft has provided information on how to create a new local administrator account at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account .

If you are successful under the new account, then it could still be related to the configuration of installed security software, I would recommend focusing on any User specific settings that may be preventing access, Ethan.
