Newer versions of Lightroom and Photoshop

Recently I purchased a new iMac which runs Big Sur. On my old computer I was using Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 6 because I do not believe in subscription software. This is upsetting because Apple no longer supports 32 bit applications and because Adobe no longer supports anything but subscription based software. It would be nice if Adobe continued to support these legacy apps and charge for upgrades but I guess that doesn't fit in their marketing strategy.

It appears I can buy a "subscription" for Lightroom and Photoshop for $10.00/month but I am not sure exactly how this works. Does the software physically reside on my computer or am I running an app that is in someone's cloud? If it is in the cloud, will I be able to use the numerous addons and plugins I have? How does this work?

I feel as though I should be charging them at least $10.00 per month. I'm still debating this "free trial" which is taking an awful long time to install, and I'm a little concerned about the space it's hogging on my hard drive.

Don't install if your device can't handle it.

Please ensure your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements to run Creative Cloud + OS + all other apps you intend to use. Check each one. Keep in mind these are baseline requirements. You'll need additional resources for scratch disk, storage, etc...

Thanks Nancy but I don't think that answers my question. I am okay with the 10.00/month for Lightroom and Photoshop and I think I am okay with 20GB of storage. My question is, what is the 20GB of storage used for?

Your Creative Cloud Storage can be used for several things, depending on which apps & online services you care to use. It's mainly used for file sharing and syncing to other web devices. You may access your Creative Cloud Storage from your CC Desktop App or by logging-in from a modern web browser.

To add to that: older plug-ins will be blocked by Big Sur (anything from before 2019, certainly, some later ones). You may need to get new ones or alternatives, you'll need to go through them one by one checking support.

Thank you for the responses, that helps a lot. When I am looking at Adobe packages I see 2 options and prices and the only difference seems to be the amount of cloud storage, 20GB vs 1TB. If the software resides on my computer, what is this cloud storage used for? If it is used for my Lightroom Catalog, how do I specify I want my catalog to also reside on my computer? What is the cloud storage used for?

How do I migrate my old catalog to the new one?

Subscription software is almost the same as perpetual software. It will install and physically reside on your computer. The difference is that you can't pay once and get a lifetime license anymore. If your monthly or yearly subscription runs out, you won't be able to use the software further - unless you renew said subscription.
