have tried to enter the serial number on the box but will not recognise it.

    Get in touch with support for serial number issues. Your post is devoid of any useful details, anyway.

    Item was bought as a sealed complete package from a private buyer on gumtree. Item arrived sealed (shrink packed) looks like the genuine article.  Opened package found smaller box inside with Adobe CD and serial number on that box. When software was run on laptop, came to enter serial number; entered serial number on inner box. Adobe would not accept it, saying it was invalid. Could this be a counterfiet.
