Premiere Elements installation problem

I recently purchased Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements 10 bundle at a retail store and am installing on Windows XP SP2 computer.  I was running Premiere Elements 1 and Adobe Photoshop CS and uninstalled Premier Elements 1 before installing version 10.  The installation ran without errors and reported a successful installation.  When launching, the welcome screen appears and the options buttons change color on mouseover, but after clicking on any of the buttons the application freezes.  The buttons no longer change color and the welcome screen has to be killed with Task Manager in order to close.  Other windows applications continue to run normally.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with the same results.
