Problems with Photoshop

I recently had to purchase a new laptop with Windows 8. On the old laptop I was able to utilize the apps without much dificulty but when I donwloaded Photoshop, along with other apps, through Adobe Cloud on the new laptop I am experiencing some problems. The Ps icon does not show up on the desktop as do other apps after downloading. I located Ps using the search feature on the desktop. when I open it and attempt to import a photograph the only option I have is to import a video. Is there something wrong with the download or am I just doing something wrong?
