question on AI version for macbook Pro

I used Illustrator back in 1998 for school.  I am wondering which version to download, that may work well with my Mac
Book Pro.  I was unable to decipher the guidelines for compatibility on Adobe website, so I hope someone who knows enoucg can offer me advice.  Most important thing is I can use the most recent version effectively that works well with this laptop, which means NOT the newest version.  If it had some helpful updated features of a version that would be relatively quick and functional on this computer, great.  Only occasional wait times of 5+ seconds would be acceptable for me.  Next level of importance, I would like a version that can be recognized in the event I want or need to edit and print files on other devices (especially with newer Illustrator versions).  I have very limited experience downloading, so I will give the info under "about this computer" for now:  It is 17-inch, early 2008 model.  Processor is 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Graphics, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB. Any suggestions?
