Photoshop Elements 1.0.1 is 15 years old and has not been tested on modern operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 10. There is a good chance it won't work at all. Your best bet is running the program in compatibility mode per the instructions I link above. However, there is no guarantee.

Some people have theorized that the problem you're experiencing happens because PSE1.0.1 reads only the first number in the version of Internet Explorer on your computer. Therefore, if you have IE10 or IE11 (which you probably do), Elements assumes you have IE1 and returns the error "You need to install Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.". Therefore, if compatibility mode doesn't work, it is possible you might bypass the installation issue by temporarily downgrading the version of Internet Explorer on your machine. Again... no guarantee, and... fair warning... I'm a Mac user, so I haven't tried this myself.

    1. Uninstall IE10 or IE11 (Install or uninstall Internet Explorer - Windows Help).
    2. Install an earlier version of Internet Explorer. Some users suggest IE8 works for PSE1.01. If you previously had IE8 (or IE9) installed, it may be available without downloading after you uninstall IE10/11, otherwise see Download Internet Explorer 8 from Official Microsoft Download Center.
    3. Install PSE 1.0.1.
    4. Once PSE is installed, upgrade your IE back to your preferred version.

If this doesn't answer your question about why PSE1.0.1 won't install, please be more specific about the issue you're experiencing. Are you getting an error message? Post a screenshot if possible by clicking the "insert image" icon at the top of the comment panel and choosing the appropriate file to upload.

    Hi ronf67675826,

I notice this  was branched from an earlier discussion. What, specifically, do you need step-by-step instructions on, running Windows in compatibility mode? If so, this may help: Using Windows 7 or Vista Compatibility Mode.
