I have tried to install CS6 extended on my Win 8 machine but the serail no I entered from the my account page
does not qualify??? I originally bought CS5 but was upgraded after 1 month free to CS6 extended. New serial no. I hade been using it with no problems with Win7 which is still accessible on the machine. I noticed that the download is for CS6 not the extended version.

ps cs6 extended trial is available here, http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html and should be activated to the full version with your serial number.

if your serial number is for the upgrade, you'll be prompted for the cs5 serial number after entering your cs6 serial number.  be sure to use the correct number at the correct time.

Thanks for the reply. I dont have the original version on the new disc and I wasnt asked for anything but the serial number which I assumed was for the upgrade. Should I either uninstall the program or deactivate it on the win 7 drive or download the original version as well onto the win 8 drive?

you don't need to install the original cs5 version.  if you use the serial number of an upgrade (cs6 ext) and cs5 is not installed, you will be prompted for the cs5 version's serial number, too.

if your cs6 serial number is rejected go here, https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/my-serial-number-doesnt-work.html
