Serial Number Not Valid

After installing new hard drive, I tried to reinstall acrobat standard version7.  During activation I was redirected due to technology issues, whateve that means. I downloaded from web site and could not activate because serial number (from cd case) was not valid.  In my adobe, I re-activated sometime ago with a different serial number and that didin't work either.  Tried chat support but they kept directing me to a page to purchase an upgrade.  V.7 worked fine, I just need to activate it.  Do I really have to purchase an upgrade???

    use the serial number posted on the page where you download acrobat.
