The serial number you use is what dictates whether or not the license you have is for an upgrade or a full license - the number codes carry that information.  If you purchased a previous version prior to owning CS3 then it is likely you purchased an upgrade license.  Upgrade are actually full product versions, meaning they are installed as standalone software and do not build onto the older version that you upgrade from.
