Should I just download the trial and then activate it with her serial number or is that serial number linked to her account and her account only?

    If it is her serial number then it is linked to her account.  If she is transfering the license to you she needs to follow:

    Beyond that need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.
