trying to install adobe reader and flash, adobe download manager keeps crashing. Windows XP pro SP3 new install.

I have recently done a new install of Win XP Pro SP3 onto a virgin hard drive.  I'm using the latest FireFox.  I'm trying to install Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash, but I keep getting "Adobe Download Manager has encountered a problem and must shut down."  I tried shutting off Winroot anti virus, but still same problem.
