Updates fail

I have tried to update Flash and Reader many times.  Each time the update gets thru the security permissions and then terminates with no message, and the update .exe is deleted.  It just disappears and does not appear in the recycle bin.  I have no clue.  I am running Windows 7.  It fails with or without my antivirus app running.
