I downloaded an updated version of camera raw. How do I mate it to my version of Lightroom 3?

you need cr 7.3 or better and lightroom 3 cannot be updated to use that. you need lr 4.3 or better.
or you can use the dng converter, Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.7
