Upgrading from Adobe CS4 to CS5 (or CS6)

How do I upgrade from Adobe CS4 to CS5? Is it a free upgrade or do I have to pay for another full version (CS5)? Also, I see that there is now a CS6. Should I go that route instead?

it was never free to upgrade major adobe versions.

currently, adobe only offers cs6 for purchase (Creative Cloud now includes Creative Suite Master Collection and Design Premium features) and several more recent versions are available with subscription (Creative Cloud pricing and membership plans | Adobe Creative Cloud).

adobe no longer sells cs5.

adobe still sells cs6 and offers subscriptions.
