What should I do when I enter the serial number correctly and the response is "the serial number is not valid"?

Did everything correctly, can't initialization my new copy. Have I just wasted a hundred bucks? Adobe has built quite the byzantine structure, what an absence of simplicity. Creative Suite vs Desktop - even they seem confused about these different product streams.
