Question

Why can't I install Adobe Reader to my Surface Pro 12" hybrid tablet/laptop?

I’ve tried to install Adobe Reader via several sources; all have been from authorized sites: Microsoft Store, Adobe.com, and my Alma Mater but have been unsuccessful. The only component that was installed was the Adobe Express Photos. I rarely need this type of program. It has been frustrating dealing with a link purportedly being a link to the Adobe Reader. Unhappily, my Alma Mater has changed its portal and direct access to the Reader must be accomplished via other means, such as direct IT support (if at all). However, the browser can read .pdf files and Microsoft 365 can convert .pdfs to .docx and back to a ,pdf. This feature of MS 365 is wonderful and increases productivity.

It sounds like you may be downloading the wrong product. Adobe Reader is now called Adobe Acrobat Reader (free version), and sometimes links redirect to other Adobe apps like Express.

    Here’s what you can do:

    1. Go directly to the official Adobe website.

    2. Search specifically for “Acrobat Reader” (not just “Reader”).

    3. Make sure you’re selecting the free Acrobat Reader, not Acrobat Pro trial or Adobe Express.

    4. If installing from the Microsoft Store, confirm the app name is Adobe Acrobat Reader, not Express.

    If installation still fails:

    • Check if your device is in S Mode (Windows 11 S Mode restricts installations).

    • Temporarily disable antivirus during install.

    • Run the installer as Administrator.

That said, you’re right  modern browsers and Microsoft 365 handle PDFs quite well. If you don’t need advanced features (form editing, digital signatures, advanced annotation), you may not even need Acrobat Reader at all.

    Hello, Community Members.

The device in question is a NEW Surface Pro 12” running Windows 11 Home. Unhappily, I have found it to have limitations that my other Dell XPS 13-9310 running Windows 11 Pro did not have including being easily able to run Adobe Reader DC and the installation of legacy devices. In consideration of these limitations, I am satisfied with by the capabilities of the Surface AND I have finally been able to install the Adobe Reader which has become I default PDF file reader replacing the default Microsoft Edge browser. This limitation did not work for several ebooks so it was critical to have the Adabe Reader installed.

Sorry, Everyone. There are a few typing mistakes in the above message, but I hope you will understand what the issue was. As mentioned, I have installed Adobe Reader DC on the Surface Pro 12: and it is working as expected.

Hi, John. The support I have received from both Microsoft and Adobe for the PREVIOUS inability to install the Adobe Reader was BAD. The ability to download and install the app EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A CURRENT ADOBE MOBILE ACCOUNT was frustrating and I was going to give up. Suddenly, I came upon a means of downloading the app (and I should have realized that I could just go to my account and attempt to download it!). I had previously used the Microsoft Store, my Alma Mater and links from the web to Adobe to download it. So, I’m not a total id...t, but it pays to have an account with an organization, at times, to obtain some degree of help,

Yes, kglad. Although I have not always experienced flawless use and interactions with Adobe, I have generally returned to its use because it continues to be just as useful as its greater competitor, Microsoft. Moreover, I used Adobe at work.

generally, having acrobat or remnants of it is problematic for reader. ie, use the acrobat cleaner after properly uninstalling acrobat, and then install reader.
