Question

Unravelling a myth

It has been  proclaimed that Wappler uses proprietary code that can only be used within Wappler. While this statement may be true when using advanced features in Wappler, it is certainly not true when comparing apples with apples. Let me show you with this video.

The problem is if you use Wappler there is no way you wont be using the advanced tools, pretty darn soon, then youre locked in, period. No one is going to buy into an expensive product and then only use 10% percent of what it can do.

Youre also short changing the client as it would be difficult to find a web developer that uses Wappler should they need to, but l guess that doesnt matter to those who are rogue traders.

Im not saying its not a good bit of software but dont be pulling the wool over peoples eyes without addressing the disadvantages.

No one beyond the Wappler forum has even heard of app connect. Do a search for Wappler related issues on Stack Overflow and see how many posts there are related to Wappler. You wont get any help  beyond the Wappler forum. The documentation from what lve heard is not uptodate as a new release comes out every week

Compare it to Wix or Webflow, Bubble etc would be a more realistic assessement. All are bits of software that serve a small number of people, who are not really that interested in web development but have the requirement of putting something web related together without having the skills to do so.

Just because you can put a flat pack together it doesnt mean you can call your self a furniture maker. We need another term for these people.......'assembly line operators' comes to mind.

A place where old web developers go to 'die' when they find it difficult to keep up with the ever changing horizons. I may very well be one of those shortly but l'm not going to be in denial, l'm going to out the truth.

to whom is your comment addressed...

to Ben, I'll let him answer, but for the most part what is presented in the video, it remains impressive in its ergonomics, integration... in short, clap clap with both hands...

to me, this is neither the point, nor the question. did you read the last sentence of my previous comment?

to both of us, and thus on the possible proprietary aspect of the code

On that point let me first say, that I fully agree with the opinion to not  produce any proprietary code, especially if we want to preserve and maintain an autonomy (in the sense of independence) that can last...

That said, I will say that whatever our position on proprietary code produced, somehow, that is the web itself and the reduction of the budgets allocated to the construction of each site which impose this...

    please, let me develop...

look at the reality... most of the websites are developed using Wordpress... and Wordpress relies mostly on templates... but to this day, there is no template (that respects itself) that rely on its own Shortcodes.

This last remark in itself, means that there is underneath a massive implementation of Shortcodes directly within the contents... so far so good...

But what happen if owners decide to change their look... their user interface... well ... change Template, that is one main feature of Wordpress...

but... but... wait a minute.... if both templates (A and B) don't use the same rules, and signatures, for their own shortcodes (Tab, accrodion, Mega menu, Sliders... and so on...)...a simple replacement is not really possible... (polymorphism... you remember this recent discussion... ;))

Replacing Templates, need a specific work above... all the shortcodes concerning A have first to be removed, and then be replaced by the new ones from B... and manually please ... for each POSTS, one by one... (an alternative consist to build a specific plugin to handle it... (always the same deal 😉 ... ) I'm not complaining, that is where Developers can make a living...

In others words Planet use Wordpress for developping websites... just over 40% https://w3techs.com/technologies/details/cm-wordpress , Wordpress use templates... and templates by essence create proprietary code... And no one complain about this... at least loud and strong enought...

my approach is not to create a polemic, nor an interminable debate that will only stir the air... I just want to relate a fact that shows that the web, at least 40% of it, relies in some way on proprietary code. this is neither a judgment nor a justification to continue, just a fact

let me know if my english is not good enought to make this purpose clear...I will try to reformulate... on the bottom line

So you are really just endorsing all my points, which l continue to make and stay true to.

Web development has become a shitehole of so many poor solutions. Even Bens view on Wordpress l couldnt repeat here but he does flip flop all over the place so its probably changed when the boot fits.

Back a few years there was really only Wordpress  and as professional web developers we kind of tolerated it being around. Roll on a number of years and we find ourselves in an intolerable vacum of similar options, dozens of libraries, frameworks hugely shite code being spewed out yet you seem to be welcoming of that together with a race to the bottom in terms of who can do it the cheapest.

I know its happening and cant change anything but it doesnt mean l have to deny its happening, lts slowly destroying the industry, no one agrees on anything, there is no clear pathway forward, confusion reigns. Happy days!

I have a comment and a question... let me start with the question.

Ben, did you record this video?

    and my comment...

Seeing this video, it's very clear that DMX in developing this solution understood that if Dreamweaver was to continue its journey, it was by redeveloping it while there was still time. What ergonomics, what an integration model, what an improvement in the user experience, magnificent.

Well, I imagine that criticism, in the negative sense of the word, may be coming, but never mind, this is a perfectly balanced tool allowed to designers.

A tool that should allow Dreamweaver to want to redouble its investment. I've always heard that only competition and quality competition can make tools evolve.

so, come on it's time to go... where is the alpha team... so we can finally have a substantive discussion

ah, I almost forgot the main thing, thanks again Ben
