Ideal network setup for using Adobe in two locations
Hi everyone, this is my first post to the Adobe Support Community. I am not sure if Using the Community would be the best place to ask, so please let me know if it can/should be moved elsewhere.
I'm experiencing many issues lately (cannot open Ai files, Pr sequences fail to render or export, and others). All issues are related to the storage of all creative content on our organization's servers. I have access to unlimited storage on these servers, and very little storage available on my computer's hard drive. So, I've been using this workflow for 5 years. Until recently, it has worked well to navigate to my files on the network storage, open, edit, re-export, etc.; now, however, the issues mentioned above are making this workflow impossible. (Additional note: I occasionally work from home. I would work from home more often if I were able to efficiently access my files. To do this, I must connect through a VPN, and the lag makes this nearly impossible as well, but did get me through the first few weeks of the pandemic. Video files are out of the question, though, and everything else just barely works.)
I asked our IT director if it'd be possible to have a small personal server onsite, with a matching small personal server at home. The idea was that these servers would sync with one another when not in use, so that either place I'm working at would be "local" (i.e., fast), and automatically up to date with the latest revisions of my work. I should note that there have been several times I've worked from hotels, but this is very rarely. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use VPN to access and edit my files in an emergency.
My question is this: is there some sort of best practiceand working computer/IT/network system for reliably accessing and editing files from two separate locations that will allow the files to be "local" regardless of which location I'm at? I've been working with Adobe's products for decades, but I've only been working with them in a network setting for the last 5 years.
The IT director's potential solution was to carry an external hard drive with me, move files I needed from the server to the hard drive, go home, work on the files, return to work, re-upload to the network. Not only would this be cumbersome in theory, it'd be nearly impossible unless I also "package" each file before moving to the hard drive, since each file calls on many assets throughout my portion of the server's storage. In other words, this will not work for me.
I would think that creative agencies that have two locations, or often collaborate with another creative agency, would have a way to make editing files throughout Adobe's creative suite possible, and fast enough to be worth doing.
I'm also aware of the various "Adobe cloud" options within the software that allow you to store your assets, files, etc., on the cloud. Ideally, I would like to have access to all of my files, though - not just those related to Adobe. Creative is a big part of what I do, but I serve many functions for the organization, so I hope not to limit my ability to acces files to adobe-related files only.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to hearing about any potential solutions that you may know about.
Zach
