Could you let me know is ‘Acrobat Prof for teams ‘ fulfiled my below technical requirements . I was currently using old version of Adobe LiveCycle ES4 and its desinger to build tailored-made fillable electronic form (PDF) for the past 10 ten years. I would like to migrate to below product. Thank you very much.

https://www.adobe.com/hk_en/acrobat/acrobat-standard.html#compare-acrobat-plans

Requirements:

  1. Embed a password for protection purpose for editable electronic form (PDF)
  2. Add validation message in PDF (says, if age field > 200, prompt alert ‘Non valid input’)
  3. Extract data from database to generate the tailored made electronic form (PDF)
  4. Let end user input the data in pre-defined fields in PDF
  5. Digest data in PDF and absorb in related tables in database (e.g. MS SQL server)
  6. Embed barcode that can uniquely define the generated PDF. To recognize or uniquely identify the generated PDF. When uploaded other than the generated one, it can figure out as non-valid input
  7. Support digital signature
  8. Adobe Reader can edit/save the PDF. If Reader cannot , which version can edit/save tailor-made PDF. Please suggest. Thanks.

Thanks a lot.

Regards,

Via from Hong Kong

    Hi @ViaChan001,

Thank you for reaching out, and we understand how much is at stake when migrating away from a platform you've relied on for the past 10 years. Choosing the right successor for your LiveCycle ES4 Designer workflows is an important decision, and we want to make sure we point you in the right direction from the start.

From your description, you've been using LiveCycle Designer to build dynamic PDF forms that integrate with a backend database (MS SQL), generate data-driven PDFs, capture user input and return it to your database, embed barcodes for unique document identification, and apply digital signatures and protection.

The first thing we'd like to clarify is that Acrobat Pro for teams is not the documented migration path from LiveCycle. The official Adobe migration path from Adobe LiveCycle is Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Forms, which carries forward the capabilities formerly delivered under the LiveCycle brand. AEM Forms is available in both JEE and OSGi deployments, with AEM Forms JEE generally recommended for customers upgrading from LiveCycle, as it is built on the same technology stack as LiveCycle and still includes the legacy LiveCycle services. You can read the official end-of-support notice and migration guidance here: https://adobe.ly/3QpFCM9

Given the scope of your requirements, including database integration, backend data ingestion into MS SQL, dynamic document generation, and barcode-based document identification, these are workflows typically delivered by AEM Forms rather than by Acrobat Pro on its own. We strongly recommend that you speak with our Adobe sales or account team for a proper feasibility assessment, so they can walk through each of your eight requirements in detail and confirm which capabilities are covered by AEM Forms, by Acrobat Pro, or by a combination of products.

You can request a consultation with our team here: https://adobe.ly/3SwPIeI

Please let us know if you have any further questions in the meantime. We're happy to help.

    Thanks,
    ^BS

    Dear BS,

Thank you for your reply. Since AEM is expensive, about 100K USD for annual subscription for using Cloud. For on-permises installation, same cost (100K USD) plus annual mainteance fee. We cannot affort it so we would like to migrate our technolgy.

We can change from dynamic database connection to server-side integration for connecting the editable PDF to backend database. Use another workaround solution for barcode embeded is accetable. No real time data generation is OK. Hardcode the editable controls and using PHP, ASP.NET, Java to extract data to certain contols in PDF.

Could you provide some training links for  ‘Acrobat Prof for teams ? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks,

    Hi @ViaChan001,

Thank you for the additional context, and we completely understand the budget consideration with AEM. Migrating from a long-standing LiveCycle ES4 setup is a significant change, and we want to make sure you're pointed in the right direction.

On Acrobat Pro for teams: This is the same Acrobat Pro application, just delivered under a Teams subscription with centralized license management through the Admin Console. There is no difference in the app's functionality between the individual and Teams versions, so the technical capabilities are identical.

On your technical requirements: Acrobat Pro on its own is not designed to cover the full set of dynamic and custom needs you've described, including:

    • Extracting data from a database to generate tailored PDFs
    • Digesting submitted data back into MS SQL
    • Embedding barcodes that uniquely identify a generated PDF
    • Hardcoding custom editable controls with server-side logic in PHP, ASP.NET, or Java

These types of workflows are achievable in one of two ways at Adobe: through AEM Forms, or by building on top of Acrobat using the Acrobat SDK and its JavaScript API.

    Training and reference resources:

For deeper, scripting-specific questions as you build out your solution, we'd also recommend posting in our Acrobat SDK community here: https://community.adobe.com/acrobat-sdk-16.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Thanks,

    ^BS
