Question

What's the preferred method for updating Adobe apps and CC Desktop for shared lab machines on JAMF without the use of admin credentials?

Executing policy commands like RUM errors out on some apps, and silent install Creative Cloud Desktop App has never worked. Managing a fleet of shared computers with multiple users per machine is annoying to say the least - also a huge time suck to manually update each machine too. Am I the only one with this issue? Where are my JAMF admins at, how do you all do this? Sending out fresh package installers is a network bandwidth hog too. Is it possible for Adobe to fix these commands so they actually work via JAMF execute command policy?

    Hi @jonathan_7030,

Thank you for reaching out. Keeping a fleet of shared lab Macs updated without manual effort on each machine is an important part of managing them, and we’d like to help you get this working reliably through Jamf.

RUM is the tool designed for environments where users cannot install updates themselves, and Jamf Pro can trigger it remotely. On macOS it needs to run with sudo, and the Adobe apps should be closed when it starts. If an app is open, the update for that app fails while updates for the other apps can still go through, so that is the first thing we would rule out. RUM also covers patches and minor updates only, so major upgrades still require a new package from the Admin Console. You can find more on how it works here: https://helpx.adobe.com/business/enterprise/deploy-apps-updates/adobe-remote-update-manager/rum-overview-setup.html

To narrow this down, could you confirm whether your lab Macs use Shared Device Licensing or Named User packages, and whether your organization is on Creative Cloud for Teams or Enterprise? It would also help to know the exact command your Jamf policy runs and what it returns for the apps that fail. For the Creative Cloud desktop app, please let us know where the installer used for the silent install came from.

Once we have those details, we will take it from there, including options to reduce the download traffic.

    Thanks,
    ^AV

    Hi AV,

Thanks for the prompt reply. We are on a Enterprise license with shared user licensing.

For RUM within JAMF, I am using this command below with Caffeinate which seems to deploy however some apps fail the update during the execution and messes up the Creative Cloud Desktop app afterwards - where I need to reboot and update missing apps with admin anyways. Acrobat is notorious for failing to install including other random apps for reasons unknown on fresh bootups.

    Running command /usr/bin/caffeinate -ims /usr/local/bin/RemoteUpdateManager --action=install...
    Result of command:
RemoteUpdateManager version is : 3.1.0.3 Starting the RemoteUpdateManager... RemoteUpdateManager exiting with Return Code (1)

Unfortunately, RUM does not update the Creative Cloud Desktop App. Even when I have it so CC Desktop app boots with OS and have enabled Keep Creative Cloud Desktop app up to date, it is hit or miss if it needs admin or not to update it. Even with a new package installed and settings re-enabled.

The most resent attempt at JAMF code execution to silently update the desktop app was this:

Executing Policy Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App Silent Update
    Running command "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Desktop Common/HDBox/Setup" --mode=silent --action=update
    Result of command:
    Exit Code: -1

It would be nice if RUM command would try to reinstall failed packages, including updating the Creative Cloud Desktop app. Would also be great to have the ability to add major releases too perhaps with a separate command. Creating new full packages ~60gb dumped through JAMF or scripted to install from our NAS is quite slow either way.

Everything works fine on PC’s which is nice, but we are 95% Apple labs and literally takes me days to touch every one of them across 3 separate locations. To say the least, I am desperate for a ideal updating solution.
