Question

Collect images Framemaker 7 Mac

I've got an old document in Framemaker and someone wants the artwork for one of the chapters. Is there a way I can export the images that are used? I have to send it over the internet and the whole folder is far too large to send, so I just want the images used in that chapter. I thought Flightcheck might do it, but it doesn't seem to be able to.

I also found something called Archive that seemed to do the trick, but it's Windows only.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times, I couldn't find any info on it which seems odd as I would have thought it a very common question.

Just out of curiosity -- I honestly don't know how well this would work -- what would be the result if you:

    1. Saved the FrameMaker chapter file as a Word .doc or .rtf file.

    2. In Word (or OpenOffice 2) opened that .doc / .rtf file and used the trick of saving *that* as HTML. (Word extracts the image and saves them as .gifs, as I recall...)

Admittedly, the images may not survive the journey... 8^p But if I had the problem I'd give it a quick try...

    Cheers & hope this helps,

Thanks, but doing it manually would be harder work and would take much longer. There are quite a lot of images in the chapters spread over three folders. I suspect it would take me a couple of hours and as I can't charge for it

    Thomas,

Yes, I saw your message, but Tom wanted a method that avoids the manual labor.

OK, but saving files as MIF, downloading and installing
a plug-in on another FM installation, etc. is also
manual work and probably takes as long...

    Tom,

If you still have the Mac version of FrameMaker AND the Windows version will not open it, you can use the Mac version to save the document in the MIF format, then open in Windows.

    Good luck,

It seems that neither of you read my last message.
Even though it involves some manual work, the
method is built into FM and it works.

Actually, I've been a bit stupid. I've just remembered that I have Framemaker 7 for Windows, so I could try that Archive plugin that's been mentioned. Just hope it opens okay on windows. Bit annoying that you have to pay $25 for functionality that really should be in the app in the first place, still at least there's a solution.

    Tom,

There is a FrameMaker plugin called Archive by Bruce Foster. See

    http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/Archive.htm

You open a Frame document or book, then archive to another folder. This plugin copies the document to the folder, creates a subfolder called Images, and then copies all the images referenced in the document to the Images subfolder, and re-references the links in the copied file to point to the ones in the Images subfolder. Thus, it does exactly what you want to do.

HOWEVER, it costs $25 and works only on Windows, but maybe you have access Windows FrameMaker on another computer. Or, if you have a Windows machine available to you, or a friend has one, download the trial version of Frame. It is good for 30 days.

Cheers guys, unfortunately, it seems to be what I expected.

There is a folder on my mac with the book, chapters and a folder with all the images in it. The document is a few hundred pages, so there are hundreds of images.

I've tried the html thing, but it didn't save out the graphics. Came to the conclusion that I'll have to create a list of references and search for them by hand. There's quite a few images, so it'll take me a few hours.

I'm so glad I don't have to use this stupid application any more.

Create an *index* of references (IOR) file for the FM file
(select Imported graphics as the type of reference to use)
and use the resulting alphabetical list of files to manually
select the files in the folder.

    Tom,

If the images are bitmaps, you can create a PDF of the document and export the images as TIFF or PNG from Acrobat.

Tom, you mention export the images but then you mention a folder being too large, so I'm a bit confused -- could you clarify whether the images are copied into the FM chapter or are they imported by reference?

If they are imported by reference, you could save the chapter as MIF and then look through the MIF with a text editor to find the filenames.
