Applied SP3 to XP, could no longer drag .ppt thumbnails or paste visio drawings into Framemaker 7.2 successfully (frame content remained blank, hidden or no-op?. Uninstalled SP3 and the pastes worked fine again.

Anyone else?

I am experiencing problems with OLE on Framemaker 7.2 running under XP SP3. Results are as described by Jim Curran with either MathType or Excel. My machine with XP SP2 does not have this problem. The problem appears to be a general problem with OLE and XP SP3. Post #10 in this thread seems to indicate that a hotfix might be available, but my searching did not lead to it. Anybody find it?

I rely on the copy in Visio, paste in Frame method, for the same reasons as Andy Cromarty. (I've had to go via PDF when there were gradient fills.) This no longer works, actually for me the symptom is, if I paste into a Frame file, I get a small, square, empty anchored frame. I will try backing out of SP3.

I use PNG, but high rez PDF and EPS also work well.

    Hi Art,
Yes, I am dragging the Visio file directly into an anchored frame.
I have not yet found an alternative method going via an intermediate graphics format that gives the same quality and resolution in the printed image. I have previously used SVG format as an intermediate, but the image quality suffers, and it's yet another set of related files that I need to manage.

    Andy, just to clarify here....
The bug has to do with importing Viso files as OLE objects. Is that what you're doing?
Or are you saving the Visio out as a graphic file format and importing that?
The graphic file import, especially importing it by reference, didn't break and works fine. Many people have always used that method because OLE wasn't reliable even before it was fixed...

    Hi Sheila,
All the graphics and document files are local; I tend to work on local copies of everything for speed when working outside the office.
I get the same symptoms in several .fm files from different books, and with both document files and graphics files in different local directories.

I guess I'll have to talk nicely to our IT support guys about removing XP SP3 :-)

Andy, are the graphics on your local system; if not, can you test in a sample file with doing the import with a sample graphic that is local, saving, then opening again and editing, to see if there is some difference in pathname or accessibility on a network location?

Thanks, but site policy here is to keep SP3 installed because of the security benefits.
The only hotfix I can find so far in any of the Adobe forums or the product manager's blog appears to be for Postscript and PDF import/export, not OLE stuff. I have tried installing it anyway but it doesn't fix the problem.

    Andy,

As you pointed out, because the bug is triggered by SP3, you can always uninstall it.

However, if you search the forum for related topics (or Google FrameMaker mailing lists), you'll find a link to a Microsoft HotFix patch for this.

The link is also mentioned in the Adobe FM product manager's blog.

File->Import->Object also fails when saving my .fm file, with the "Internal error occurred while writing imported graphics..." error.

Now I'm stuck, I cannot update any of the several hundred Visio diagrams in my user manuals...
