Framemaker 7.2 Windows XP SP3 .ppt and visio paste

Applied SP3 to XP, could no longer drag .ppt thumbnails or paste visio drawings into Framemaker 7.2 successfully (frame content remained blank, hidden or no-op?. Uninstalled SP3 and the pastes worked fine again.

Anyone else?

    I get the same symptoms.
Drag and drop of a Visio diagram into FM7.2 fails silently with no apparent result. Edit->Undo then crashes Frame with an internal error 7204, 6109922, 7778420, 0 and dumps a log file. Clicking on the message box OK button then crashes it with a null pointer dereferencing error.

Opening and editing a Visio diagram previously pasted into Frame, using drag and drop before SP3 was installed, now causes a failure. The edit appears to be successful but saving the .fm file reports an error: "An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document".

Sheila, That works! Good enough to keep SP3 installed. Thanks. Let's hope Adobe fix the drag and drop with 7.2 and SP3 soon. Not able to migrate to FM 8 yet.

I think you might be caught between a rock and hard place as far as trying to get interoperability for OLE between new OS version (SP3) working with what is essentially a 3+ year-old application for FM 7.2.

Can you do File > Import > Object in FM, would that give you the same end result?

Installed SP3 again, then deinstalled and installed Framemaker 7.2. Didn't work, pastes of visio (or .ppt thumbnails) still refused to work. Adobe "knows" a paste has happened, it becomes "undo'able", but the contents of the frame are blank, and the right click menu doesn't have the menu items which are activated by having a graphic object in the frame. Drag and drop removes the object from the Microsoft program, and undo in the Microsoft program restores it. Drag and drop between MS programs is fine, so this looks like the Adobe side is behaving badly as the target of paste.

The scrolling crash with graphics is a known problem, something to do with the mouse driver. There's a utility called "FreeWheel" somewhere on the net that seems to have fixed it for many folks, you might be able to find more info or some links if you search the FM forum here.

Sheila, good suggestion, well worth a try.

Art, I have had those errors on FM 7.2, before applying SP3. Some people suggest scroll more slowly and beware of scroll wheels... I had a particular graphic that would crash framemaker when I tried to view the page it was on. My workaround was to create a new document and paste all the pages before and after the offending graphic.

A little bit more on this, and a couple of other threads...

After the SP3 update, I'm getting a Frame internal error on 7.1 when saving a file that contains a Viso OLE object. Says that it can't write graphic data and some may have been lost.

Just to clarify, did you reboot after the update?

This doesn't surprise me, because OLE has been such a security risk that I'm sure the SP updates it.

One other possibility is to reinstall FM after the SP3 update, possibly to "re-register" or referesh the OLE linkages between FM and Windows. I'd do it by using the Windows Add/Remove apps, remove FM, reboot, then reinstall FM. (be sure to copy your maker.ini file(s) first if you have tweaks to them that you want to save.)
