Question

Numbering Figures within a Chapter

Hi,

I have a chapter within a book which contains alot of photos, all of which i want to give a Figure number, ie Figure 7-1, 7-2 etc (7 being the chapter number). Please can someone help me out with how i automate this process as I will no doubt be adding more photos to the document and i don't want to have to manually re-number the figures throughout. I have tried several times to create a format, but it always ends up affecting the numbered lists which appear before and after the photographs.

I hope i have made some sense in explaining this!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Avril Roberts

The short answer is, yes, you should probably use different streams to track different elements. Makes life easier... So if your heads are using the H: stream, your figures F:, and so on, they won't step on each other.

I believe you mean using 'Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in Book.' When I do, my heading numbers will not restart at the beginning of the new chapter. i.e. 2.1 will be 2.x depending on Chapter 1's last value of 1.x. Do I need to create new heading autonumber streams?

    Thanks

    Raymond,
In your book file, you probably have para numbering set to restart for each chapter. Select all the chapters in which you want numbers to increment, right click, and set the Numbering properties to increment...

While we are on autonumbers, why don't my Figure numbers increment from chapter to chapter within a book? I have the same F:Figure <n+1>:/sn across all chapters of the book. The first figure in every chapter restarts at 1??

Thanks

Hi all, i would just like to say that i have now managed to get the Figure numbering to work correctly!! Many thanks. I did have trouble sourcing the information from the Help file, i usually only post here if i can't find the information in the help file. I used F: Figure <$chapnum>-<n+> and this has worked perfectly and not affected my other numbered lists.
Thanks again.
Avril

    > Yes, but it is difficult to find info on series labels in the documentation, so I see why many FrameMaker users miss the concept or have trouble with it.

Another concept may users have trouble with is searching the Internet for help and information resources for FrameMaker.

For example, these Google search turn up a lot of hits on the series numbering topic:

NOTE: Uppercase AND and uppercase OR, parentheses, and the quotes, are required for the searches to operate correctly.

    * This one is useful to find resources that refer to both auto number and autonumber:

    framemaker (auto AND number)

    * This one finds resources for series labels, which FrameMaker formally refers to as series identifiers:

framemaker ("series label" OR "series identifier")

Yes, but it is difficult to find info on series labels in the documentation, so I see why many FrameMaker users miss the concept or have trouble with it.

Series labels allow you to set up different numbering schemes within the same document that increment independently and do not interfere with one another. For example, if you want to have numbered paragraphs for both figures and tables, you can create two autonumbering paragraph formats that use different series labels, and the two will never conflict.

Sherman, your initial suggestion was technically correct and would work without the series label, albiet with the risk of conflict from other numbering schemes. Also, your observation that Arnis did not include the word "Figure" in his example formats, which was requested in the original post. However, it is better practice to always use a series label, so that was sound advice even if not originally requested. And Arnis meant to say that Avril can add the word "Figure" to his suggested examples, in which case the original request will be satisfied.

Avril, amongst this exchange, have you gotten the answer to your question? Your request is easily achieved through native FrameMaker features and if you don't fully understand the suggestions you've gotten so far, please let us know and/or consult the FM help.
