Question

Can't save file when using montserrat or roboto fonts in elaborate typeset illustrator file.

Something is wrong with illustrator while using certain type fonts or paste information from PDF.  Maybe they are typekit fonts?  Probably more fonts?   I'm using a very high end dell precision 5820 with an i9 and Quadro RTX 4000 nvdia card.   I continually have issues that don't allow me to save a file.  I get aout 5-6 errors messages stating unknown errors when saving.  This seems to happen when using certain fonts, styles, or colors of fonts.  Running Windows 10 latest updates.  Latest illustrator. 27.3.1

On top of that, annoyed that this didn't retain my first post question before logging in.   That is dumb on top of how dumb not being able to save a file is in an application nearly as old as I am. Save is like number 2 on the programming list of should always work items.  I think #1 is load application.

Hello @cliffclof,

We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. I hope the suggestions shared by Monika and Bobby helped resolve the problem. If not, kindly share some more information, like the name of the fonts you are having trouble with, the source of the fonts, and a screen recording of the problem (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/screen-record-an-issue-on-windows-amp-macos-for-sharing/td-p/12967727) so that we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

I don't know this for certain, but I am pretty sure Google has released numerous technical updates for certain type families on the Google Fonts web site, including Montserrat and Roboto. I've seen weird issues with those and other Google typefaces in other applications, CorelDRAW in particular. They either appear looking like Arial in the font menu or a type object will get styled in Arial when attempting to apply a certain Google typeface to the piece of text. In some cases downloading another newer copy of the affected typeface fixes the problem. In other cases syncing a copy of the same typeface from Adobe Fonts was a solution. The point is, it's possible the PDFs containing the glitchy text are using older, more buggy versions of those fonts.

Another technical problem I've observed on my computer systems: if I have certain applications running in the background (cough: CorelDRAW) while using Adobe Illustrator some of the fonts in the Illustrator font menu will disappear. If I close the other applications and re-launch Illustrator all of the missing fonts are restored in the font menu.

I just thought of another possible issue. Are you saving your files in PDF format or as Illustrator AI files? Are you copying text from PDFs created by someone else? It's possible they might have been using a OTF Variable version of Montserrat and/or Roboto. I've seen technical issues with Variable versions of those fonts. The PDF format doesn't properly support OTF Variable Fonts. If I'm working with Variable fonts in an Illustrator document I don't use the PDF format if I want to continue editing the document.

There have been issues with saving PDFs that have been addressed in the latest version. Does it help when you update to version 27.4?

Also: try and download the fonts again. Did you get them from Google fonts? Try if they are available on Adobe Fonts.
