Envelope Distort Issues

When I try to envelope distort, this happens:

So it all looks like a jumbled mess - any ideas why? The object was in front of the text.

Interesting. Something about that shape causes an unholy spiral of mesh points on top of each other:

Looks like a metal band logo.
