Floor Plans

I need to create a floor plan on Illustrator or some kind of tool. I have CC installed on my PC. The room is 24x36. I'd like to get a grid representing feet and start outlining walls and corridors. Is there a specific template or layout for building floor plans? I am very familiar with Photoshop, and new to Illustrator. Please respond with specific steps. Please don't refer me to Google to search for stuff.

Is this for a professional project for a client or a personal project for home?

Paul, depends how complex the plan is, and the intended use.

As much as I like Illustrator, it's  not really a great tool for proper floorplans, unless you get Hotdoor CadTools plugin.

Software like Sketchup pro or Revit is what you need.

Or try Sweet Home 3D (free/dontate) I think you can print to pdf

You can use the Perspective grid to get what you need.

You can use the perspective grid tool or from View>Perspective Grid>Show Grid

I'd recommend searching some of the free vector art sites like Vecteezy.com for floor plan icons you can use. Download and open the free art file in Illustrator. Create a new document in Illustrator, and in the New Document dialog set your document size to 24" x 36" (1/12th scale where 1" = 1'). If you want the document horizontal, change the orientation to landscape. Then click the Create button. Turn on Rulers (View > Rulers or Ctrl+R, Command+R on Mac). Now you can go back to the free art, select an icon, go to the new document you just set up, and copy/paste and position the images there. Arrange as desired.

You can display a grid in Illustrator just like in Photoshop and it can be altered in preferences. View-Show Grid.
