How do I manage to draw an ellipse over my existing art work?

Hi Friends, I just downloaded illustrator so I am still new using this program. I am trying to draw a eclipse over what is eyes, nose, and lips of an animal face and which I currently have in layer two.  Ive seen several tutorials on how to lock one layer so that when I draw over it it stays there and lets me draw over my initial drawing or picture on layer one, yet this isnt working, and when ever I insert the eclipse (which could make up for the head of the animal) it goes over my existing illustrator and animal face, and it wont let me put it over. Does anybody here know how to fix this? I would be deeply gratefull if you could let me know how to fix this!! Thank you.

Michelle

I have initially created even though Ive locked the two previous screens, the scanned drawing and the animal face, so I cant see my drawing.

There are a couple of reasons you can't see your ellipse.

  • It may have no fill or stroke and be invisible.
  • It may be behind other objects and therefore covered up.
  • It may be hidden.

A screen shot will help us if you don't see it. Include the selected ellipse and the Layers panel. Make the Layers panel a little wider and spin open the  >  symbol so we can see the contents.

The layers are visible. However, the layer subordinate is hidden. When you click the ">" on the left side of the layer, the subdocuments appear. Check the eye symbol at the beginning. Could it be hidden?

After you have drawn your eyes, nose and ears click on the empty space to the left of the layer that they are on. When you do a lock icon will appear which means that nothing on that layer can be moved or otherwise affected. You should also lock any other layers that are below the layer that you have locked. You should then create a new layer by clicking on the icon to the immediate left of the trash can icon on the bottom of the layers panel. Once you have done that click on the new layer and then whatever you draw will appear on that layer. You'll notice a colored square appears at the far right of the layer. That indicates that the selected art is on that layer. See screen shot.

By the way, I assume you the shape you want to draw is an "ellipse" which is an elongated circle. An "eclipse" is when the moon goes in front of the sun and you'll burn your eyes out if you look at it directly.

Thank you  so much for the reply and sorry about the typos, however the problem right now is that when I do that and create the  new screen with the ellipse (sorry about that, not the eclipse) The ellipse goes over what I have initially created even though Ive locked the two previous screens, the scanned drawing and the animal face, so I cant see my drawing. Is this a glitch or am I missing something? Is there a way to manually try to put one screen over the other one? How does one do that?

Thank you so much again
