Received an automatic update. When I clicked to install, the update returned this message:

Installation Incomplete
Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.2 update failed to install
The update cannot be applied to the product.

Say what?
I'm at Illustrator CS3 13.0.1. First time an CS3 update dug in its heels and sneered back at me.

Anybody got a clue about this? Bad update?

    I HAD THE SAME ERROR.

I DOWNLOADED THE UPDATE DIRECTLY FROM ADOBE.COM TO MY DESKTOP, EXTRACTED IT, AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY.

    HERE IS THE LINK:

Adobe is not providing updates for illustrator since 09/04/2007 (ALMOST 3 YEARS AGO!).

Well, I do not like to count all the bugs CS3 have, but I can mention just a few:

All the problems with Adobe Illustrator CS3 are constantly frustrating me and make my job a lot more difficult. Why is CS2 is a lot better than CS3?
Maybe some one can help me to fix all these bugs that I have encountered:
    1) Preview does not work.
I cannot understand why AI CS2 can display Preview before you open a document, but is impossible to do it using CS3. I think is a waste of time using a second program just to view a document file. Using Bridge is just a waste of time because display lot of information that you do not need and the view options are so limited.
    2) Strokes display incorrectly.
Any stroke under .12 pt is display uneven which makes working with the pen tool frustrating.
    3) Pantone Pallette Window.
This window still represents a problem even when you select Persistent option, due to the fact that when you select a PMS color, the selection jumps to the bottom of the list. So you have scroll back up to select the next PMS color.
    4) Mesh Tool
The mesh tool works Ok as long as you do not re-size the artwork. If you re-size the artwork everything is distorted. In other words, your work is useless and you just wasted time. I have to use CS2 to solve the problem. That is right, you have to use the OLD version that works better than the new version.
    5) Outline Stroke.
If you convert a path into outline, you end up with excessive extra anchor points. Yes, you can reduce the amount of the anchor points by using the Add to Shape Area option on Pathfinder feature. But still is not as good as CS2, and can cost delays on your work.
    6) Tiff files
CS3 crashes every time you open or place a tiff file. CS2 did not have this problem.
    7) Text Editing
Every time you have a text with indicator ending on the next line without text, it displays the indicator on the second to the last line. This can cost costly mistakes when you are editing text, spacing, etc.
    8) Selecting text
If you editing different text sentences, you have to be careful that the programs actually takes the text that you are selecting with the text tool. Some times it takes double click for the program to understand that you are not working with the previous sentence. And sometimes you have to select the Black arrow to click on the text you want to edit and then select the text tool to make the editing. This problem is very annoying.

Well I can keep going but like I said, I will only mention a few of the bugs.

oh and what is this about "update cannot be applied to the product", is there anything that adobe says about the student version disallowing updates? All other applications seem to update just fine.

    Hi Malinda

It's not just the Student edition that has this problem. At our

office here I have the problem (running a retail CS3 licence with

Tiger OS), but our other two CS3 licences (running Leopard) don't

seem to have any problem. Whatever is causing the issue is clearly

beyond the ability and/or interest of Adobe technicians.

I have just had to console myself that the update I can't install

only seems to be concerned with Freehand-Illustrator compatibility.

I'm running (Mac) Leopard, and I've tried everything on this forum. I finally managed to get Acrobat to install an update by deleting all of the auto installed updates. But even when I try to update manually with the dmg from adobe's site (posted above) for AI I still get the error. I've reinstalled Illustrator about 15 times now, I've tried jumping over 13.0.1 straight to 13.0.2 and it won't let me without doing .1 first. As soon as I hit the adobe patch it knocks me out again with the error occurred message. wtf. If anyone can figure this out for mac let me know. And yes I know that there is a mac forum too, but I can't find a similar posting there concerning this issue. Also I love that this thread has been up for nearly two years now and still nothing. Thanks adobe.

Hi Lee: have you come across the Adobe Tech Note http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408822.html

This suggests a solution for problems with the 13.0.1 update.

    Good luck!

I could not install update 13.0.1 or 13.0.2 to CS3 Illustrator (Win XP Pro). Adobe technical posted an answer via online customer support within 2 days of my submitting the issue with them. The fix worked and 13.0.1 installed. Next I download update 13.0.2 and installed it with no problems. Here is the text from Adobe's fix. I hope it works for you too.

    "Do the following:
    1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Common
    Files\Adobe\Installers.

    2. Locate the {C4519961-AC64-4565-B3AF-9050296B5D5A}.patch file and
    delete it.

    3. Download the 13.0.1 update installer from the following web page:

    www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3629

    4. Install the update manually. For instructions, see web page in Step 3 above.

If the issue persists, repeat the process except, delete all of the
.patch files in the location listed in step 1 above."

Last time I looked you could up from older versions directly from adobe, but it's time sensitive and then you're out of luck. (I am talking about the whole suite. I can only assume it's for the individual products as well)

According to amazon..."Licensed owners of Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, Design Standard, Web Premium, Web Standard, Production Premium, or Master Collection can upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium for special pricing."

From Adobe email... "Save up to US$200 for a limited time.*
Available to owners of Creative Suite 1 or 2, Macromedia® Studio 8, Studio MX 2004, or Production Studio who upgrade to Creative Suite 4 before February 28, 2009."

So after February... you pay $200 more unless you have CS3.

    >I noticed that you can only upgrade from CS3.

Not so, according to Adobe's upgrade eligibility information .
