Illustrator not allowing me to edit

I am working in illustrator 29.3 when it suddenly stops allowing me to select any elements and presents the 'hand' icon which grabs and moves entire image around artboard. I have had to shutdown and restart my mac a number of times to get back into edit mode - I'm hoping someone might have a fix - very frustrating
