Illustrator update 24.0.2 does not overwrite an existing file

Hi all. This update doesn't allow to overvrite an existing file. I have an action that just saves into a directory  (users/myname/downolads) naming the file ooook.pdf and then close the window. If there is already another file named the same ooook.pdf -maybe a file I have previously produced- Ai doesn't overwrite the file and steps to the "close window" action.
So basically I have done all the work for nothing.

This action has worked for 4 years until this update 24.0.2. Not fine 😞

Thanks for sharing the details, @Graphics50. We are also able to replicate this behaviour at our end. Please allow me some time to check this with the product team. In the meantime, I would request you to upvote this UserVoice and your comment there.

Thanks for your time & patience. I checked with the product team and would like to inform you this is an intended change in the latest version of Illustrator to accommodate the request on this UserVoice (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/31723057-wh...).

The workaround is to rename the file name while exporting a specific artboard.

However, If you do not like this change, you may upvote this UserVoice (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/45508540-name-a...) and add your comment there.

Thanks & Regards,

So I understand that this has been a problem for a few years now... HOW has this not been fixed? Another poster on here says it's an artboard issue and I agree with them. The whole point of having the adobe suite is that files are interchangeable and have a seamless workflow, no? A workaround isn't good enough - we can figure this out for ourselves, what we want is having a feature that has worked perfectly in the past working as it is supposed to now.

I was having this problem with the an older  2023 version of illustrator/indesign -  it was crashing my brand new M1 macbook pro because it created 300GB 'system data' just from being open an hour. I updated to the latest version available for illustrator/indesign and the 'save as' with selected artboard issue is still happening.

I'm trying to save out an artboard as an eps so all the extra crap off the edge of arboard does not affect the size when I place the image into indesign. Every single time i want to make an update to the illustrator file and want to export and overwrite the existing file it asks me to overwrite, i say yes, and it creates a new file, so i have to delete the old file, rename the new file and then relink it in indesign. It is SUCH a pain in the ass and is massively slowing down my workflow. Using an older version of illustrator is not an option for me when previous versions of illustrator don't play well with silicone. When can we expect a fix for this - it's been three years now.....

Hi @Graphics50,

Sorry to hear about this. Would you mind elaborating on the issue you are facing? Are you unable to overwrite an already saved file which is not an .Ai or .PDF file?

Would it be possible for you to share a sample file and a small recording of the issue?

I will check this at my end and will forward it to the product team.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Thanks Anshul for your answer.

I deleted version 26.4 and reverted back to Illustrator 26.3.1; so, I cannot replicate the error. And I can't send you a sample file because  with version 26.3.1, the problem disappear (it's not the file(s), it is the program).

Basically, it goes like this. We usually File > Export our .ai files to JPEGs, with Artboard selected. it gives us a file name like this: Image_01,jpg, but with version 26.4, it give us a file name like this: Image.jpg.

That's a problem for us. It should give us: Image_01.jpg. That feature is broken in version 26.4 of Ilustrator. I am on a 14" M1 MacbookPro. And a co-worker who is on a PC (I don't know the configuration), was able to replicate that problem on his computer.

Can you replicate that at your end?

Hi all,

The fix for this issue has been released in the latest update of Illustrator for macOS which is 24.0.3. Please refer to this post for more information: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/new-update-for-illustrator-24-0-3-mac-only/td-p/10870085

Hello All.

I'm sorry, but the latest 24.0.3 update may have fixed the PDF save, but it still does nothing for the other export features.

What i have found is that if you are exporting anything, png, pdf, jpeg, etc, the problem seems to be in the "Use Artboards" checkbox option during the saving path dialoge.

If you're like me, you check the box to crop out all the residual art that you've moved off to the sides of the artboard. I have found that if I do not check the option, the file IS replaced, albeit with the junk around the art. If i remove all the residual art from around the artboard and export also without the option checked, the art is cropped to the artbaord AND the file IS also replaced.

Basically, the "Use Artboard" option has become useless. So now I find that simply making sure all art is within the artboard, nothing else around, and export > replace, the file is overwritten just fine, and don's check the option at all.

My fix: move all the stuff I'm not using to a layer, lock the layer, then toggle out the visibility of that layer, export without "Use Artboards", replace the file....Works just fine, like it always used to.

My conclusion: The bug is somewhere in the "Use Artboards" option that somehow triggers sequential re-numbering/naming of the file, instead of the overwrite, regardless of confirming "...file already exitsts. Do you want to replace it?"

Prior to the updates in version 24.0.xx, I was not having this issue and I have been using Catalina since it came out, so I don't feel it has anything to do with the OS.

Hope this helps... at least until the bug is fixed.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry about this issue. We are able to replicate this issue at our end and our Product team is looking into it.
Till the time it is fixed, you may continue using 24.0.1 or simply use Save function instead of Save As. Few other users have confirmed that giving permissions from system preferences has also fixed the issue. You may also, try the steps shared here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/unable-to-overwrite-pdf-in-illustrator-24-0-2-on-macos-ca...

I would also request if you can upvote this issue here: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/39418213-overwriting-pd...
This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

Hi Srishti,

When can we expect an update from Adobe?

This takes more than a week to solve?

We pay a lot of money for a product that is broken with every update.

And when we ask for information on when the bugs are resolved we do not hear back from anyone.

Hi Bryan,

So sorry about the previous experience. All the updates related to this issue will be shared on the UserVoice link I shared above. This request is currently in UNDER REVIEW status, which means that although we don't have an exact ETA, our Product team is working hard to test & finalize the changes as soon as we can. Please stay tuned for updates, and thanks in advance for your patience.

Does it work correctly when you don't use the action for it?

Also: did it work in version 24.0.1?

Where do you save the file?

Did you also update the system or saved in a different location since this last worked?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
It worked fine until update 24.0.2, I created this action for Ai 2017 and always worked fine.
I save the files into always the same directory, Macintosh HD/Users/myname/Downloads.

Also, it does not overwrite existing file even if I manually save by name. I select the file already present in the folder but once the alert appears I click on overwrite, the program start doing something, but does not write the new file replacing the old one.

In Preferences > File Handling and Clipboard can you uncheck the Experimental Network save option? And if that does not work the Save in Background as well.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind sharing version of OS?
Also, I'd like to know if you have tried resetting the preferences. If not, please try doing that.
Reset Preferences option is now available in Preferences > General in Illustrator CC2020 (v24.0.2). I am also attaching a screenshot as well for your reference:

Let us know how it goes.

Hi all,

Have the same issue as described above. When trying to overwrite an existing file, the system asks if I want to replace, when clicking yes, the file appears to be saved. But the file still has the old data and changes have not be saved.

The error occurred after the 24.0.02 update. Have removed pref file in the liberary and reset prefs to no avail.
