Question

Mousewheel usage create lag

Basically, title.

Using alt +  mousewheel to zoom in and out is very laggy and slow (5-10 seconds to update). No issues on previous version or using zoom tool. Issue persists with animated zoom disabled and enabling "zoom with mousewheel".

Navigating the document with mousewheel causes the same issue.

Just chiming in to say I’m experiencing the same issues, similar specs to others, and none of the workarounds suggested below have fixed it.

Months later. latest builds and clean drivers and hardware prefs turned on and off and still not resolved.

I have threadripper 7965 / Nvidia 5090 / 256 5600RAM

And it worked in 2025 version.

Can we leave AI alone and focus on basic QOL please?!

I had a very long conversation with Gemini, but finaly found a solution:

  1. Close Adobe Illustrator.
  2. Locate the Illustrator.exe file on your computer.
    • Default path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2026\Support Files\Contents\Windows
  3. Right-click on Illustrator.exe and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  5. Click on Change high DPI settings.
  6. At the bottom, check the box: "Override high DPI scaling behavior."
  7. In the dropdown menu "Scaling performed by:", select Application.
    • Note: This forces Illustrator to handle the scaling itself instead of letting Windows "stretch" the GPU output.
  8. Click OK and restart Illustrator.

Does not help me unfortunately. nearly 20 years of high DPI screens and we still can’t figure this out

Same here.

High end Windows PC, 64 GB of RAM, and Xeon processor, and the lag persists.
No problems with previous versions.
I can also confirm that when I enter isolation mode, the problem disappears, so it is definitely a problem related to Illustrator and not my PC.

Intel i-7 with Nvidia RTX 3080 reporting in with the same problem.
I scroll, Illustrator (2026 v30.0) freezes for 2-6 seconds.
This is very clearly a bug, not a hardware issue.

**** additional new info ****
Lag does not happen in isolated view. For example if I group the whole design and double click on it to go into isolated view I experience no lag in zooming at all.
****

Same here!

On average it takes 4sec after each zoom in or out scroll with the mouse wheel to regain control and to continue working.

No lag in previous versions. No matter if it'a a new file created in 30 or an old one.

Safe mode restart does nothing for me.

GPU acceleration and Animeted zoom settings make no difference if turned on or off.

computer: i9-14900, 96Gb ram, gen 4 ssds, RTX 3090 (clean studio drivers), win 11

Which mouse is it?

Makes no difference which. Mz main one is MX Master 3 but I just connected an old mouse with usb cable and it is the same.

What does make a difference is if I am in isolated view (even if I group the whole design just for the sake of it) there is no lag at all. With any mouse.

Got the same Issue, scrolling and alt+scrolling freezes everything for 2-6 seconds. There's no spikes on CPU, GPU, RAM nor Disks in taskmanager while this is happening. Win 10 / Illustrator 30.0

Is GPU Acceleration turned on in Illustrator? It might be worth checking mouse settings in Windows' OS settings (under the Bluetooth & devices category).

Generally I find mouse wheel performance for zooming or scrolling to be a bit choppy, not just in Illustrator, but also in other graphics applications. In Illustrator I prefer using the Ctrl+Spacebar keyboard shortcut to bring up the Zoom tool and then click-drag the left mouse button to smoothly zoom the view in or out. That shortcut and the spacebar key for the hand tool allows me to fine tune the view of my work. GPU acceleration has to be enabled for animated zoom to work.

Hi @pietrob51238225,

Thanks for reporting this. Could you please confirm the version of Illustrator and your OS details? It would also help to know if the lag occurs with all files or only specific ones, and whether you notice any improvement when testing in a new blank document. Please also try running your system in Safe Mode to rule out any third-party interference.

Windows: Start your PC in Safe Mode
macOS: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode

If possible, share a short screen recording showing the lag so I can review it further.

Looking forward to your update.
Abhishek

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

Illustrator 2026, v30.0, OS Win 11 v 24h2, build SO 26100.6899

The issue persists on blank new documents created in the illustrator version mentioned above, as well as in documents created in previous versions, in safe mode and with illustrator preferences reset to default.

Hi @pietrob51238225,

Thanks for confirming those details. Could you please try disabling GPU Performance from Preferences > Performance and see if that improves the mouse wheel response? If there’s no change, please share a short screen recording of the lag, so I can check it further with the team.

Looking forward to your update.
