Select > Start Global Edit always fails (macOS, Ai 29.3.1)

No matter what; even if I create a new document with three copied and pasted squares, Start Global Edit returns: “Global Edit is currently not supported for more than 1000 highlighted objects.”

What is the problem here?

    Hi ​@UselessUser,

    Thank you for reaching out, and sorry for the trouble you’re experiencing while using Global Edits. Would you mind opening the Document Info panel, and choosing Objects in its menu?
    Then it will quickly count the selected objects, with the limitations Global Edit has.

    Apparently, there are no objects in my document, but there are, as you can see below.
