This does happen quit often. It is just a bug in Illustrator. Restart your computer and it works again.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I had exactly the same issue with the spacebar! I quit photoshop after I reset the preferences, I then closed all the apps and I restarted my iMac by holding down P, R, Option and Command, to refresh all the system. And all DONE!

I don't understand the issue at all. However, it seems adobe gets itself confused with other open apps and that's why the hand tool quickcommand doesn't work. I solved it by quitting apps one by one until it started working again.

Just happened to me. I closed a bunch of apps including zoom, Apple Mail, Messages, and maybe another that I'm not remembering. That seemed to fixed it. I didn't have Word or Excel open. So, it seems quitting other apps is the key (at least for some of us).

I just wanted to chime in by adding Bitwarden (a password manager) to the list of apps hijacking the spacebar shortcut. as soon as I quit the desktop standalone app the hand tool shortcut immediately returned to normal behaviour. Didn't even require a restart or anything.

I am so very frustrated by this problem for many reasons.
First, I have experienced this problem with the last 3 versions of illustrator and on multiple different macs. So this problem has been intermittent for me for years. It just stops working one day. Now I am on a week old Mac using version 2021 on a fresh OS and it is happening AGAIN!!!

I tired all your solutions listed here:
Checked MAC Keyboard Shortcuts

Closed all other applications and relaunched.

Renamed all my Preferences and Cache Files.

In some cases also antivirus was to blame.

We don't know what's installed on your computer.

Can you check all the processes?

Hello, this solution is not working for me. In general, it's not a great solution anyway, I have to have other programs open while using adobe products, especially since I am designing assets to be used by these programs. I have just updated my adobe software, and I am running 10.15.6. I need to have the hand tool shortcut working.

I guess nobody is happy when other software interferes. But then it's a problem the other software company needs to solve. So if youhave found out which one it is, then maybe contact the manufacturer to fix it.

Yep - it was a Microsoft issue. As soon as I closed Powerpoint, it worked fine.

I read through most of the comments and couldn't find what I found as my solution.

Turns out it's a Wacom setting. When there's a major OS update I just delete everything related to Wacom on my computer and reinstall and it's all back to normal.
