closely-drawn pencil lines snap to join each other, Illustrator on iPad

I want to draw a few short parallel curved line segments in Illustrator for the iPad.

After I draw the first short line segment the anchor points are still active. If I begin a new segment too close to the start of the first segment the first segment jumps over to join the new line.

I turned off the "snap" preference but this effect still occurs.  Do I need to deselect each individual line segment before I can start to draw a new one nearby?
