Convert photo to sketch pattern

Question

I am a woodworker and focus on the craft called Intarsia. This is where you take a pattern and cut pieces of wood to make a picture. I got adobe illustrator and am very confused as to how to use it.

What I want to do is import a picture, convert it to a sketch, trace the pieces and "blow them out" so I can take the pattern pieces and cut,.

I'd appreaciate any wisdom or techniques I could use.

Your example is very streamlined with smooth lines. If you want to turn a random photo into that kind of drawing, then there is no automatic way. Draw them manually.

Using automatic functionality, the Image Trace feature could do what you want, but it probably won't give you the clean result you need.
