double tap does not deselect

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 5th generation, with OS 16.6.1, and an official Apple Pencil.

 

In Ipad Illustrator I have Apple Pencil | Double-tap set to 'deselct object or path'. But it doesn't seem to work.

 

For example, I'm drawing a path, and I'd like to stop the path (deselect the path, I presume), but double tapping the pencil just adds more points to my path.

    You double tap the side of the pencil with your finger, you don't double tap the pencil onto the screen!
