Gradient fill option disappears when I have more than 10 shapes selected in Illustrator

Question

When I have more than ten shapes selected, such as simple circles, and go to Properties > Fill, the "Gradient" option no longer appears, only "Solid Color."
Is this a bug?
 
Actually, it looks like the word "Gradient" appears for a split second and then disappears.
